The luxury sustainable fashion brand Catharina Natang (CN) was founded by Mrs. Catherine Natang in 2022. Catherine is a Geologist by education but had an overwhelming passion for fashion design. After completing her training programme from the Joyce Ababio College of Creative Design in Ghana, she returned to Cameroon in 2021 with a vision to launch a fashion brand that was built on the philosophy of sustainable fashion. With funding from the Afri-Plastics Challenge 2022, CN developed a programme to train women and girls displaced by Cameroon’s Anglophone Crisis.
Removed from their normal and their dependents. The implementation of this programme occurred alongside upgrade training for existing tailors and designers. Despite the fact that fashion design training is mostly by apprenticeship, and that many still perceived it and other creative design careers and jobs for school dropouts, CN’s project was very successful in attracting existing fashion designers and tailors as well as novices with an interest in fashion. The successful implementation of this programme through 2023 led to the idea of VTI-CN.
Catherine partnered with Dr. Maboh M. Nkwati to create VTI-CN to bring Creative Design careers like Fashion, Textile, Graphic, Jewellery and Footwear and Accessories Design into the mainstream. In the past, people acquired skills in these areas only through apprenticeship in local workshops. Majority of those who sought these training were people who for one reason or the other could not pursue high school and university education.
Developing and implementing a world class education programme for these careers will is helping to change the narrative and make people see that these careers can attract some of the most educated and creative minds in the community. Environments, these women found themselves in very difficult financial situations. Majority of them depended on charity to meet their basic needs. CN created the programme to provide free fashion design training to these women so that they could use the skills acquired to fend for themselves.
The institution has well-defined policies to support its mission. These policies are organized under academic, administrative, student, safety and information and technology policies. A dedicated link is being developed to provide details of individual polices
The Board of Trustees (BoT) oversees VTI-CN activities to ensure that they are geared towards achieving the institutional mission. The BoT also approves the strategic plan, institutional policies, new programmes and partnerships. They play a key advisory role in the appointment of administrative and teaching staff, fees rates as well as the institutional budget.
The BoT is chaired by Founder and also includes the Co-Founder and four members appointed for a renewable three year-term.
